Surfing at Crantock

Bowgie Inn is the perfect place for a post surf pit stop, especially if you have been catching waves at the closest peak known as the Bowgie Left. Warm up with a hot drink, or dive into a well earned bowl of chips – food never tastes better than post-surf!

We’re very lucky to be situated in beautiful Crantock, just two miles outside Newquay, the surf capital of the UK. Crantock is a great beach for surfing, bodyboarding or swimming, and is often less crowded than Fistral, its famous neighbour. Its wide, sandy bay is welcoming for surfers of all abilities, and stand up paddle boarding and river kayaking are also popular on The Gannel estuary at high tide.

Crantock is a good beach for learners, but please keep your eye out for rip tides, and always swim or surf between the flags. The Gannel is a tidal river estuary so please check the tide times before you visit.

Lifeguards patrol from May – September.

Bowgie Inn is located on West Pentire headland, overlooking the stunning sands of Crantock Beach, and just a 15 minute drive from Newquay.

The breathtaking River Gannel lies to the right. To the left, you can take the South West Coast Path around West Pentire Headland and enjoy a stunning walk towards Holywell Bay. You’ll be amazed by Porthjoke (or Polly Joke as the locals call it) beach which is a secluded bay hidden away from the summer crowds – just a short stroll away from Bowgie.
