Out & About

Explore the coastal paradise of West Pentire – just steps from Bowgie Inn

Walks from the door

Bowgie is the perfect base camp for a great family day out!

Situated in the heart of the West Pentire Headland, Crantock, we are spoilt for choice, in between the beautiful Crantock Beach and the wildlife haven that is Porth ‘Polly Joke’. It’s just a short stroll from Bowgie to the coastal path that takes you on a circular walk of the headland, passing both beaches.

Out on the coast path you will get up close to the wild Atlantic Ocean, watch seabirds at play and witness the swathes of colour of the poppy and corn marigold fields. Or you can take the short path to Crantock Beach where children of all ages can play in the rock pools or laze on the dune backed golden sands. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a dolphin or seal.

We sponsor the Pentire Point West route of the South West Coast Path, which starts at Bowgie and is a fantastic walk at any time of the year. After you work up an appetite, we’re on hand to help! www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/554/

Walk the South West Coast Path

One of the world’s most famous footpath’s The South West Coast Path goes all the way from Somerset and winds down the Cornish coastline. Through the car park of Bowgie, the coastal path can be joined by following the trail to Crantock Beach.

Find the cave carvings

There is a magical place in Crantock, and if you’re prepared to search in the right places, your hard work will be rewarded! There’s a cave revealing a beautiful carving of a woman’s face and a poignant inscription.

Wander to Vugga Cove

A must-see during your trip to Crantock, Vugga Cove is en route to the headland and is a telltale sign of Newquay’s coastal history – a place where small-scale fishing took place. Vugga is rocks and tide pools when the water is out, with an incredible view of Crantock, East Pentire and the whole bay.

Watch the wildlife

Not only is the local coastline home to stunning views, it is also home to a diverse range of habitats, and the variety of the sea life in Cornwall makes it one of the best places in the the UK to see marine animals, including, gannets, grey seals, dolphins and basking sharks.

Enjoy the community spirit

Crantock is known for its community traditions, such as The Bale Push that takes place every September in the centre of the village. At Bowgie, we host a variety of community events throughout the year, including the annual Ale and Cider Festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend with live music, the best local ale/ cider and an amazing atmosphere – all in support of Cornwall Hospice Care.

See Penpol Creek

‘Penpol’ in Cornish means ‘head of the creek’ and is an inlet off the River Gannel. When it’s low tide, you can see clues from history including steps, mooring rings and chains!

Visit Crantock Parish Church

A church which has suffered a lot during its history dating back to 420AD. There have been rebuilds, collapsing towers and most recently a fire in 1985 which took almost a year to recover from. The stained glass windows survived though and are well worth seeing as they tell the story of the life of the Church founder St Carantoc.
