As spring turns to summer, Crantock plays host to one of the most beautiful sights on the South West Coast Path – the letterbox red poppy fields. To see the blooming of the bright red flowers, with the deep blue ocean behind really is something, and it keeps locals and visitors returning year after year.
The start of 2024 has been rainy, there’s no denying it; but as a result the coast path and hedgerows have come alive with foxgloves and daisies and the poppies were back too.
Crantock’s floral show-stopper is the sign that summer is on the way. Each June, the fields behind the Bowgie Inn at West Pentire are completely transformed by these glorious flowers, and we love seeing them.
Poppies are associated with remembrance and are a symbol of the sacrifices made by soldiers during World War One, which we are humbly reminded of as we look at the fields of blooming poppies each year.
As well as being a historical symbol, the poppy fields are an inspiration to local artists and photographers with hundreds of photos hitting social media every year. Tag us in your poppy field photos and we’ll be sure to share!
The poppy fields are also vitally important for the local wildlife. The poppies attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, which play a crucial role in maintaining the biodiversity of the area. A walk along the coast path from Polly Joke to the poppy fields is a chance to connect with nature and history. Sit quietly by the poppies and see how many bees and butterflies you can spot!
We hope everyone was able to visit the poppies this year. And stop off for a drink with an unbeatable view at The Bowgie Inn on their way back!
