30 Apr May at the Bowgie: Longer days, sea air & that first taste of summer

There’s something about May in Crantock that just feels different. The days stretch out a little longer, the sun sits a little higher, and after months of grey skies and wild weather – this has certainly been a winter for the books! – everything starts to feel lighter again. It’s that turning point where spring quietly slips into early summer, and you can really feel it along the coast.
The cliffs begin to buzz with life, walkers returning to the paths, pausing to take in those wide Atlantic views. Down below, the sea starts calling people back in – whether it’s a quick paddle or a full cold-water dip for the brave. It’s the kind of month where you find yourself staying outside that bit longer, making the most of every golden hour.
And at the Bowgie, it’s one of our favourite times of year.
Perched on the headland, right in the heart of it all, we’re lucky to see the seasons shift in real time. May is when everything comes back to life – the terrace fills up again, the doors stay open longer, and there’s that familiar, easy-going atmosphere that comes with warmer days and lighter evenings.
It’s the perfect spot to stop off after a coastal walk, especially if you’ve been exploring around West Pentire or along the paths towards Polly Joke. Whether you’re muddy-booted, windswept, or fresh from the sea, there’s always a warm welcome waiting.
And then there are the sunsets. If you’ve spent an evening on the terrace at this time of year, you’ll know just how special they can be. The sky softens, the light dips over the water, and everything seems to slow down for a moment. It’s the kind of place where one drink easily turns into two – not because you planned it, but because you don’t quite want to leave.
May also brings those well-placed bank holidays – the perfect excuse to take a break, catch up with friends, and enjoy a bit of time outdoors. Whether you’re local or just visiting for a long weekend, it’s a chance to really soak up what makes this stretch of coastline so special.
And for a different kind of atmosphere, we’ll be showing the FA Cup Final live at Bowgie this month. It’s always a great one to watch with a crowd – a bit of friendly rivalry, plenty of energy, and a good excuse to settle in with a drink and enjoy the moment.
More than anything, May is about those simple, feel-good moments – fresh sea air, time well spent, and that sense that the best of the year is just getting started.
So whether you’re heading out for a walk, planning your first sea dip of the season, or just looking for a place to watch the sun go down, we’d love to see you.
Here’s to longer days, lighter evenings, and the start of summer at Bowgie.
