“I’m BORED!” Every parents most hated expression throughout the Summer Holidays. All you want to do is sit back and soak up the sunshine, but your kids have a very different idea of fun. Luckily, Cornwall is surrounded by miles of gorgeous beaches, with plenty to keep everyone entertained on the Cornish coast.
Go for a Paddle
Whether you and your little ones just fancy an ankle paddle or you’re all a bit more adventurous, there is a water-based activity to suit all. Paddle boarding when it’s calm is the ultimate in active relaxation; slowly paddle your way around the bay, explore the hidden coves and caves and maybe try some yoga! You can even plonk your mini-me on the front of the board if you are confident and capable.
Do a Beach Clean!
Here at The Bowgie, we are eco-enthusiasts. We are part of the Final Straw Cornwall, a campaign aiming to make Cornwall the first single-use plastic straw free county in the UK and we are devoted to keeping our coastlines clean. Doing a beach clean is a fun and educational way to pass the time, and it’s crazy how involved you’ll get!! You’ll be saving the beach, helping marine life and also get that warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing you’ve done your good deed for the day. The kids will learn from an early age how important it is to protect our environment.
Swimming in the sea is an entirely different experience to that of the pool. Nothing will wake you up faster from a sleepless night than diving head first under a crashing wave. The water may seem cold but you’ll quickly acclimatise and the salt makes it easier to float – so starfish on your back and let your worries drift away. The sea is a great place for kids to learn to swim (with constant supervision) as they will have better buoyancy in the salt water, and in their wetsuit! Jump the waves, paddle away and enjoy hours of (free!) summer fun.
Whether you’re bodyboarding or full on stand-up surfing, there is no better feeling than riding a wave in the sunshine. The sparkling, crystal clear water rolling beneath you is unforgettable and there are plenty of surf schools in and around Newquay on hand to help. You can even check out the conditions before you arrive on our Surf Cam! Start them young and inspire your future Kelly Slater!
Build a Sandcastle
Good old fashioned sandcastles, they never get boring! After all, the beach is the biggest sand box imaginable. From classic bucket and spade cities to full-blown racing cars and mermaid tales, there is endless fun to be had for little and big kids alike. You can decorate your creations with shells, seaweed and little bits of driftwood. Why not have a competition and the winner gets a pint/coca cola? (Age dependent!)
Eat, drink and be merry at The Bowgie!
If you need a post-beach-day feast or a mid-afternoon pick me up – head up to The Bowgie Inn. With all day brunch, massive salads, classic cheesy chips, Sunday roasts, burgers, quiches and a kids menu, you will be spoilt for choice and guaranteed to find something to satisfy even the fussiest eaters! Wash it all down with a classic Cornish ale, a sparkling glass of something delicious, a classic gin or something soft – our beer garden is the best place to overlook the gorgeous bay of Crantock and plan your next day of summer fun!
