Ooh.
Today is that magical non-existent day. Well, it does exist, otherwise none of what you are currently doing would be happening, but it only exists every four years.
It’s as if the 29th of February is a bit unruly so they have to keep it locked in a box. It wriggles and kicks the lid when it knows the 28th February is approaching but most of the time they manage to keep it contained. The 28th February ends and the 1st of March begins without a glitch and the 29th of February misses its moment to shine. It is a little bit like Jane Eyre with Bertha locked up in the attic. Maybe that’s where the 29th of February is kept; dressed in a wedding dress and bridal veil, full of rage and stomping around in the darkness.
But sometimes, when the guardians take their eye off the ball and the 29th of February times it just right, it bursts free of its shackles and bounds out playfully into the sun. It’s bubbling with excitement and opportunity and that’s why we love it.
We should see 29th February as an inspiration. It has to wait for what it wants; that shows patience. It has to fight for it’s rights; that shows perseverance. It has to time its escape and fool its captors; that shows intelligence. But it’s the energy and enjoyment of its time in the spotlight we should mostly be inspired by.
So make sure you do something fabulous today. You owe it to the 29th February. Yeah you can propose to your man, but what else can you do?
Coming to The Bowgie Inn, Crantock, is the obvious answer, as that’s where the 29th of Feb is coming. It’s hiking the coastal path, going for a walk on the beach, it’s having a slap up Bowgie Lunch and a pint of cider to finish. Then it’s going back to its box in the attic happy – ready to it all again in 4 years time.
