Meet Adam Griffiths AKA ‘Bearman’ (possibly the best nickname ever) who has been living in Newquay for 12 surf-filled years. He loves Crantock and enjoys a pint of Rattler cider which by our standards makes him around 90% Cornish.
Drawn to Cornwall by the call of the coast, he can often be found on Crantock (his favourite beach of course) but wherever there are surf-worthy waves Adam won’t be far behind. He said ‘I love living in Cornwall because you’re always pretty close to the ocean. It’s not far to travel between the north and south coast and there are so many epic beaches to be seen and surfed.’
Now there are many jobs in this world but when you ask someone what their occupation is and they reply ‘Surfer and surf school owner’ you know you are in the company of someone seriously cool. When you then see a picture of that person hanging ten you know they are more than cool.
So guess what. Adam is a Surfer and Surf School owner… and here is a picture of him hanging ten along with some other great shots taken by Vince Timpson.
In case you are a non surfer we thought we would explain what hanging ten actually means. To ‘Hang Ten’ a surfer has to position the board so the back is covered by the wave and they can then walk to the front of the board and hang all ten toes over the nose of the board. It’s really hard. So when you are in the presence of someone who hangs ten as if they were born to do so, it is difficult to resist the urge to bow down to show utter respect to those hanging ten toes.
Ever wondered what a surfer does when there is no surf? Adam is a true explorer and he doesn’t just sit around, he goes out looking for adventure and also dinner! He told us:
‘I have been having so much fun recently. I have been going paddle boarding fishing around the Newquay coastline when the surfs has been totally flat, which over the past few weeks it has been. And its proved to be a pretty good method to catch a few fish and get a bit of excerise at the same time’
